The epic Wall Game of 2023
An exceptional contest in muddy conditions made this one of the most gripping games of recent years. Beneath heavy skies, an Oppidan team of sporting heavyweights were very much the bookies' favourites before the game began. But this was without reckoning upon the sheer grit and determination of a single-minded College team, who heroically gave their all to prevent an Oppidan rout.
It was a close-run thing in the end, with the visitors coming very close to scoring on a couple of occasions. But battle-honours were finally shared in a 0-0 draw. This is what the history books will record, though such a scoreline fails adequately to reflect the ding-dong David-and-Goliath intensity of the struggle. Rightly did the Collegers cheer with weary relief at the end.
